![]() Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,
I pray that you and those you love are staying healthy as many in our nation still yearn for healing from the ongoing pandemic. During our most recent event, the darkness of this challenging past year and a half year was compared to the womb: a place of uncertainty preceding a new beginning, with potential only our loving God can fully comprehend.
I hope we can all bear witness this new beginning soon and pray that these summer months provide time for you to rest and renew your strength to continue on the path of justice.
Over the past two weeks, Justice Revival and several #Faith4ERA campaign partners—Sojourners, Religions for Peace USA, Freedom Road, and Faith in Public Life Ohio—have held a series of advocacy meetings in support of a bill (S.J. Res. 1) to eliminate the arbitrary timeline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Nineteen faith advocates in-state joined us to make the case for equality to their senators: Sen. Richard Burr (NC), Sen. Pat Toomey (PA), Sen. Shelley Capito (WV), and Sen. Rob Portman (OH). We’re pleased to be voicing a faith-inspired message of equal justice to our lawmakers and forging relationships in the process.
Special thanks to all of you who joined the Tweetstorm last Friday to amplify this message with senators. The #Faith4ERA campaign is built on the understanding that every person is made in the image of God and deserves equal treatment under the law. You can join the advocacy effort this fall as we continue urging lawmakers to ensure the ERA is recognized as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution this year.
Stay tuned for updates on how you can be involved, and in the meantime encourage your faith leaders to sign our Interfaith Statement for the ERA—especially those in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
This Independence Day, I teamed up with Dr. Tarunjit Singh Butalia of Religions for Peace USA and Rev. Jack Sullivan Jr. of the Ohio Council of Churches to make the case for all people of faith to support the Equal Rights Amendment.
Together, we called on Ohio Senator Rob Portman—a fellow person of faith—to support S.J. Res. 1. that would eliminate any time limit on the ratification process. Our event Uprooting Racism & Reimagining Policing brought faithful justice advocates together for a special conversation around the current state of discriminatory policing, appeals to the international human rights community, calls for transformational reform, and the role faith communities can play in bringing about change. Nicole Austin-Hillery of Human Rights Watch highlighted a key role for faith communities in the struggle for racial justice: “We need faith voices because they can access and speak to people that we can't reach. It is the key to have faith leaders with us because of the influence they wield and the impact they can have.”
Justin Hansford of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center, who is an expert on Critical Race Theory, urged all to continue searching for solutions: “We know the disease [racism] exists. The solution is to find medicine, not ban understanding the disease.”
Rev. Terrance M. McKinley of Sojourners is an elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He centered his comments around the God-given dignity of the human person: “Christians believe that all people have the divine fingerprint & are fearfully, wonderfully made. The church has a responsibility to protect these lives. We’ve allowed others to take lives that only God can give & take.”
New Traditions at Justice Revival ![]() From left to right: Megan Perry (Legal Intern for the ERA), Charlie Palladino (Christian Human Rights Education Program Officer), Prachi Lalwani (Human Rights & Communications Intern), Mary Katherine McCullough (Advocacy & Mobilizing Coordinator), and Mary Grace Donohoe (Communications Manager) This summer, the Justice Revival team gathered in Washington, D.C. for our very first in-person summer retreat, themed “Renewing Our Strength in the Lord.” Staff and volunteers came from Florida, New York, and Virginia to gather for a day of fellowship and renewal. We reflected on scripture, learned more about ourselves and our teammates, and shared strategies for both personal and professional growth. I felt blessed to bear witness to the dedication, heart, talent, and faith in this exceptional group of people, and I look forward to hosting our team again next summer in Washington.
Intern or Volunteer with Justice Revival Justice Revival is on the lookout for a talented, part-time volunteer who is passionate about faith, human rights, and the potential to write gender equality into the U.S. Constitution through the ERA. Learn more and apply today to be our next Advocacy & Mobilizing Coordinator to take this campaign to the next level. "This summer, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as the Advocacy & Mobilizing Coordinator for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) at Justice Revival. Justice Revival is a community of passionate and loving individuals, and I feel truly blessed to have been a part of it. The historic and rapidly growing #Faith4ERA campaign—upon which most of my work has centered—currently consists of close to 500 faith leaders and a dozen organizational partners, all united in their belief that all people have inherent worth and deserve equal rights in the U.S. Constitution. I have learned more about the importance of the ERA and the promise it holds to better the lives of all people in this great nation. People of faith have a vital role to play in voicing support for the ERA, and it is my prayer that the #Faith4ERA campaign will continue to grow as more people dedicate themselves to doing just that." -Mary Katherine McCullough (Summer Advocacy & Mobilizing Coordinator) Our Legal Internship, Ministry Internship, and Communications and Fundraising Internship positions are also still accepting applications through August 15th. These are all excellent opportunities to gain experience in justice ministry and advance the cause of human rights. To apply, please submit your cover letter, resume, brief statement of faith, and writing sample to applications@justicerevival.org.
