Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,
Blessings to you this New Year! At Justice Revival we’re getting a strong start to 2020, forging connections with fellow faith leaders working for justice, and growing our advocacy and education efforts. A Strong Start to a Dynamic Year Early this month I visited Des Moines, Iowa for a Presidential Forum hosted by Vote the Common Good. VCG envisions bringing “faith, hope, and love” to the forefront this election year, and I was glad to join my friend Patrick Carolan, who directs their Catholic outreach, to lead several workshops at their big launch. The common good and human rights surely go hand in hand!
Another highlight was hearing Justice Revival Advisor Mike McCurry and other media experts discuss growing coverage of prophetic faith voices. I spoke to Mike’s students from Wesley Theological Seminary’s Center for Public Theology about our work at Justice Revival. Connecting with Sister Simone Campbell, who leads NETWORK and is known for her advocacy with Nuns on the Bus was a privilege, as well! ![]() ![]() ![]()
Women Welcome! (to the Constitution) Some breaking news we’re celebrating this week is the Virginia’s legislature’s historic ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, which safeguards against violations of women's rights. This basic human rights measure has a home in most constitutions the world over; the U.S. is among a small minority lacking any protection against gender discrimination.
Interested in learning more about the ERA—its significance, potential effect, and promise for reducing problems like gender based violence and harm to pregnant women? Justice Revival is creating a workshop on the ERA in 2020. Let us know if you'd like to bring this training to your community.
Also, please mark your calendar for a special event on Thursday, March 5th, noon to 1:00 pm Eastern. Justice Revival will be hosting a web-based discussion, “Religion, Gender, Justice & Equality: Faith Leaders Reflect on the Promise of the Equal Rights Amendment.” Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, President of Union Theological Seminary, and Rev. Dr. Traci C. West, Professor of Ethics and African American Studies, are guest speakers. This event is a collaboration between Justice Revival and The Carter Center.
Stand Against Hate Crimes ![]() Last week Justice Revival joined a diverse group of interfaith partners signing a letter to Congress in support of the Jabara-Heyer “No Hate” Act. This key legislation would promote better responses to hate crimes in our communities and better tracking of hate crimes data. You can learn more about this bill in our latest blog article, and take action by calling your Congress people to express your support.
Christian Human Rights Ed This month I have the wonderful opportunity to teach several sessions of our flagship course at my home congregation, Bradley Hills Presbyterian. About forty friends gathered last Sunday and we had such a robust, engaging conversation about the rights of migrants that we’ve planned to continue it this weekend! Visit our updated education page to download a flyer about our course, “Human Rights in Christian Perspective.” I hope you’ll consider sharing this with at least a few friends at your church or others who might be interested in this learning journey. ![]()
Thank You Again! ![]() Let me close with a word of deep gratitude for the incredible support this community showed during our No Exceptions campaign. We were moved and encouraged that campaign gifts totaled over $17,000, and that our revenue grew by over 70% in 2019! Thank you so much for your support. From the entire team here at Justice Revival, thank you for your amazing generosity, heart, and dedication to this mission. With your support, we will continue pressing on toward the goal of a more loving, just, and equitable America, as an act of hope and faith. Together, we can be a people and inspire a nation that proclaims and practices justice and mercy for all.
