Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,

As our nation honored the Fourth of July, we were reminded how much work remains for America to truly uphold our noblest ideals. In the last week we have grieved two appalling tragedies–a young, Black Jayland Walker’s body being riddled with bullets by police in Akron, Ohio, and yet another mass shooting by an angry, troubled young man in Highland Park, Illinois. The gaping divide between the way these two men were treated reveals the  expanse of persistent racism in our nation.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court overturned New York’s restrictions—in place since 1913—on carrying concealed weapons in public. Its ruling in NYSRPA v. Bruen made millions of Americans less safe, even as the Gun Violence Archive counted more than 300 mass shootings through early July.

This came just a day after the Supreme Court in Dobbs vs. Jackson read the constitution through a 19th Century lens, glorifying an era when women were excluded from the vote and most rights of citizenship. If this mode of decision-making continues, women could lose important gains of the last five decades–and all claims to Equal Protection.

In this season of setbacks and threats to human rights, fierce champions for justice are needed more than ever. Drawing strength from our shared faith and solidarity in community, we can yet see the glory of God and the hope of a renewed world shining through daunting moments like these. And taking prayerful steps for justice together can lend power to this defiant hope.

Justice Revival Joins the National Call for Moral Revival

On June 18th, I was privileged to stand with thousands of activists who came out to support poor and low wage workers and to call for a more just and equitable America with the Poor People’s Campaign. For me, it was akin to a family reunion comprised of union workers, veterans for peace, church folks, and people of all generations pressing our country towards a more just and equitable future.

You can learn more about the goals of the Poor People’s Campaign and take action locally here.

Honoring the Rights of the Poor in a Post-Roe America

Just two weeks later, Justice Revival hosted the Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, alongside Sojourner’s Political Director, Lauren W. Reliford, MSW for our latest event, “Honoring the Rights of the Poor in a Post-Roe America.”

Together, they shed light on why Christians must meet this moment of sweeping transition by standing with low-income families, women of color, and all those who will be most affected by the dramatic reversal Roe v. Wade in the midst of our maternal health crisis. You can watch the event and learn how to take action here.

Urging the Senate: Pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

In a season where pregnant women are more vulnerable then they have been in decades, where mothers don’t have the formula they need to keep their infants healthy, and where pregnant workers are denied reasonable accommodations at work, Justice Revival joined dozens of faith organizations led by NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice in urging the Senate to “support this urgently needed legislation and to bring the bill to the floor for a vote as quickly as possible.”

Contact your Senator and urge them to pass the PWFA today.

On Juneteenth, Marching Toward Liberation

Juneteenth is a time to celebrate the long-fought demise of chattel slavery and the untold human suffering and aguish that violent enterprise caused. It calls us to be courageous in facing the truth about slavery in America, the anti-Black racism that it spawned and perpetuated, and the resulting racial and economic injustice that persist over 150 years later. In case you missed it, here are several insightful resources we shared.

I’ll be preaching again this summer at my home church, Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland, where I’ve also previously shared Justice Revival’s flagship course “Human Rights in Christian Perspective.” All are welcome to join us via Livestream!

Thank you for being a vital part of this effort to move our country, with all its glorious ideals and yet-unfulfilled potential, closer to being the Beloved Community.
