Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,
Time and again, we're reminded of how crucial it is that people of faith convey God’s passion for justice to our society and nation.
As we grieve the lost potential to strengthen voting rights this season, as we continue striving mightily for equality under the law, I'm also reminded of how vital it is that we draw inspiration not just from our chances of winning, but from the worthiness of our goals themselves.
Last Thursday, I was honored to speak about the #Faith4ERA campaign as part of the dean’s speaker series at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law. I shared from the heart and from my own experiences about how easy it can be for us American Christians to spot violence against women “over there”–in a foreign culture or a faraway land–but miss the connections to campus sexual assault or domestic violence here at home. And I spoke frankly about the misguided message that “good Christians” don’t belong in the struggle for women’s rights. Every Christian belongs in the struggle for human rights.
You can also tune in tomorrow night (January 27th) on Instagram Live at 8 pm ET, when I’ll be joining The New Evangelicals along with Meghan Tschanz, our #Faith4ERA Coordinator. You’ll get the full rundown on why we need the ERA and how this long sought reform reflects our Christian commitments to human rights. Visit our Instagram and click our profile image to watch live.
Tomorrow--January 27, 2022--marks the two year anniversary of Virginia’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. That’s the date when all constitutional requirements were met for the ERA to become the 28th Amendment. This makes tomorrow, two years on, the date the ERA should go into effect across the country.
Every day we fail to publish the ERA as the law of the land in this country is another day American women and LGBTQ+ people are at risk. This month, Justice Revival supported a friend of the court brief in the lawsuit brought by Nevada, Illinois, and Arizona to demand publication of the ERA, now that all requirements have been met. We were joined by NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, National Council of Jewish Women, Mormons for ERA, and other faith groups allied with us in this historic struggle.
Voting Rights: “The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long” Last week, our representatives failed to safeguard our democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. may have said it best in The Washington Post:
“If civil rights leaders had given up at the first signs of resistance to equality in the 1950s, our nation would never have won the next decade’s great victories over racial subjugation. The same determination is required after last week’s defeat of voting rights legislation. It was depressing. It was enraging. But it cannot be the final act.”
Now, it’s up to you and me to fight voter suppression in our local elections. It’s up to us to speak out about the urgent need to ensure all Americans can exercise their sacred right to vote. Voting rights is an issue of racial justice and equity. Please do all you can locally to defend access to the ballet box.
Talk about this with your faith leaders. Your friends at church. Your children over dinner. Our democracy depends on it. Dr. King would remind us, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
