Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,

In a week when we’ve witnessed yet again the dangers of police and racist violence against people of color in America, we seek solace in a God who is not distant or removed from the pains of injustice. Christ suffered as a human rights victim in the extreme, and did not let victimhood or oppression have the last word. We take heart knowing God loves justice fervently and is ever working to redeem the world—in and through the flawed human people God is also busy redeeming.

Roundtable & Discussion on Systemic Racism in U.S. Policing

Thank you to all who joined us for last month’s roundtable, “Human Rights Accountability for Systemic Racism in U.S. Policing,” where I had the opportunity to moderate a panel conversation among three dynamic, insightful experts. They discussed how to use the human rights framework to further crucial goals of safeguarding Black lives and ending grave racial discrimination in the U.S. criminal system. Our guest speakers included:

  • Nicole Austin Hillery, Executive Director, U.S. Programs, Human Rights Watch
  • Justin Hansford, Executive Director of the Thurgood Marshall Center for Civil Rights and Professor of Law, Howard University
  • Gay J. McDougall, Distinguished Scholar in-Residence, Leitner Center for International Law and Justice, Fordham University School of Law

If you were unable to join the live event, you can still view the video and bring your voice to the online discussion, where you’ll find resources to help you delve deeper into these vital and urgent issues. This was the third roundtable event that Justice Revival co-hosted in partnership with the Forum on Human Rights at the Carter Center.

Dismantling Racism Dialogue

This summer Justice Revival board member and Presbyterian pastor Erin Grayson led an intergenerational group of Christians in Bainbridge Island, Washington in a series of dialogues on dismantling racism. The group lamented the most recent spate of police killings of Black and brown people including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks in the shadow of a local police killing of Stonechild Chiefstick, a native man and member of the neighboring Suquamish Tribe.

Participants acknowledged the country’s deadly legacy and ongoing threat of racism as sinful. Drawing on Justice Revival resources, they explored how racism violates fundamental human rights our nation has pledged to uphold. Going forward, the group committed to regular meetings to continue educating themselves and holding each other accountable to the work of dismantling racism.

DC based board members Teisha Garrett, Patrick Carolan, & Allyson McKinney Timm gathered for a socially distant in-person meeting; the full board met virtually over—what else?—Zoom]

Justice Revival Board Retreat

Justice Revival’s faithful and dedicated board of directors convened in late June for our annual summer treat—a weekend of socially distant reflection, prayer, strategizing, and planning to support the work of this ministry.

We looked back on important lessons learned during our first three years together, reflected on the culture we hope to shape within the board and the organization, evaluated our own performance, and charted the course for the rest of this year.

Shifting public health circumstances and economic effects of the pandemic require us to stay nimble, creative and responsive, so that we might make the most of a moment when more Americans are conscious of the weight of injustice in our country and open to the Spirit’s prompting to be agents of much-needed change.
