SUMMARY:Reconciling Religion and Human Rights?
DESCRIPTION:Can religious social movements play a meaningful role in an inclusive\, pluralistic movement for universal human rights? Or does the human rights movement’s legitimacy depend on a secular identity untainted by religion\, as some have suggested? \nDrawing on her experience as a human rights advocate\, lawyer\, and faith leader\, our speaker will explore the complex relationship between religion and human rights and\, in particular\, perennial tensions over the issue of gender equality. Her ongoing work leading an interfaith campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will serve as a case study for this critical reflection. \nThe event will be livestreamed.
